About Podiatry and the Profession

Podiatry (known formerly as chiropody) is the clinical professionfoot concerned with the assessment, diagnosis and comprehensive management of conditions of the foot and lower limb.  The foot is a highly complex structure that can develop problems affecting a patient's overall health and wellbeing. Podiatrists are skilled in the diagnosis and management of foot disorders and are able to carry out a range of treatments for patients in all age groups.
Patient management and treatments range from simple maintenance, nail and skin disorders and nail surgery to the mechanical correction of gait and posture, and more complex surgical techniques.
The titles 'Podiatrist' and 'Chiropodist' are protected and regulated by the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC). It is a criminal offence for anyone to use these titles unless they are registered with the HCPC.
Podiatrists undertake a rigorous three year full time BSc honours degree and are highly trained specialists. They are able to diagnose and treat a wide range of foot and lower limb conditions and are able to recognise diseases that affect the whole body as they manifest themselves in the foot, for example diabetes.

Health & Care Professions Council

What is the Health and Care Professions Council? The HCPC regulates health and care professionals in the UK and was set up to protect the public. The HCPC registers only thosefeet image professionals who meet its rigorous standards for their training, professional skills and behaviour. The HCPC can take action against healthcare professionals who fall below these standards and can prosecute those who pretend to be registered or who use a 'protected title' e.g. Chiropodist or Podiatrist when they are not entitled to do so. What does this mean for you? This means that professionals registered with the HCPC are genuine and meet national standards. This offers you protection if professionals fail to meet these standards. You can also check with the HCPC that a healthcare professional is registered by following this link: http://www.hpc-uk.org/check/ Ensure that your healthcare professionals are HCPC registered - don't take the risk.
